Some point in 1957

It was eleven--no, it was closer to midnight than to eleven--and Alice was so furious she couldn't see straight. Her finger shook in the rotary dial and her mind was so scattered that she chose the wrong number twice before remembering that she was dialing America and needed a few extra numbers to have it go through.

She was dialing America (and sniffing hard--sniffing with fury) because Allen Carey was an insufferable prick with a horrible upbringing and a stupid face and he had ruined her day, ruined her year, ruined her life, and she would never ever forgive him. She would total all of his cars for as long as he chose to have them. She would chase him with whatever cars she owned next. She would haunt him like a ghost. He was the worst person in existence and if he knew any of her school friends well, she'd have started spreading rumors already.

Violet and Mallory had endured hours of ranting already, but not yet today. Mallory was busy. Violet was busier. They had good boyfriends who weren't twats.

Alice sat down on the far side of her bed and stared at the wall as the phone rang.

Chaya, conveniently, was the one nearest the phone – she wasn't always there anymore, but she was at home then, and was the one who picked up the phone and, expecting it to be for her parents, said in a voice mimicking her mother's, "Linden residence."

"You sound terrible," was Chaya's almost immediate reaction, sitting down in the armchair nearest the telephone, twisting the cord around. "And by terrible I mean furious – I didn't make you mad, did I?"

"Well – nothing! Nothing besides going to college, but you already knew about that, and it might have made you angry at me, I wanted to make sure you weren't calling because you were angry."

It had come up back in June. She couldn't be calling out of rage now, could she?

Chaya was naturally nervous.

From nervousness came confusion – Allen, after all, was the old-family-friend-cum-boyfriend, or maybe the other way around, and Chaya had met him at least once (though not after he was the boyfriend). The last time she'd heard about Allen he was a good thing.

"I take it you broke up," she said wryly. "What happened?"

"I hope you wrecked his car because he dumped you."

Chaya approved.

"Also if he steps on you I think he's going to get killed by a lot of people, primarily you, because he can't step on you enough to do anything except damage your toenail polish or your shoes, which is enough of a reason to kill him, and if your toes aren't polished you should polish them just to make the stepping-on incur a worse punishment. Did he give you a reason or is he just a tosser?"

"Well, what the heck." Chaya blinked at her lap, blankly, as if it was the offending personage and wasn't making any sense. "No reason at all? That doesn't make any sense. How could anyone want to break up with you?"

Chaya rolled her eyes.

If only she could roll them at Allen Carey.

"Male beings are such idiots," she said lightly, not sure if there was a more obvious statement possible. "And he should have to pay his own father back for inciting anger, it's not like it was your fault. Nobody held him responsible at all?"

"It's not like you signed up to get dumped. And he should be required to give a reason before just dumping someone – I won't ever let anyone dump anyone I know without a reason! If I could afford to call him and demand a reason I would." Not that she could, and not that he really knew who he was as far as she knew, but she'd do it. Demand a reason and then use one of her grandmother's curses on him.

"And I hope he's never invited to your house again. I hope if he comes in your father shoots him. Doesn't he threaten boys with a shotgun anyway? Has he ever used it?"

"Run him over next time you see him – wait, his name isn't really Allen? What a poser."

Chaya had forgotten he ever had another name.

"Nickname for what? You've always been Al, he can't just steal your name – what is it everybody else wants?"

Besides death by Chaya, which is what he seemed to be signing up for. Not that she was confrontational or violent in reality. But she could yell curses at people and come up with secretive evil plans.

"Was he even any good at sex?"

Chaya figured idiots never were. Except for the unfortunate times when they could only think with the smaller head, anyway.

"You're not a bitch."

Chaya just got angrier and angrier at this guy – and Chaya was not an angry person. Not really.

"You do know that, right? He's the bitch. I don't know if men can be bitches; they can now."

From off in the distance, a woman's voice called, "Chaya Angelina! Language!" and Chaya burst out laughing.

"He deserved nothing less, I'm sure. Did she agree with you?"

As if.

"I'm sure you still can! I can teach you a curse, too."

"No, they don't work – it's not real magic, it's just an old cultural thing that scares people because Yiddish sounds scary."

She wished they worked.

"Although sometimes people psych themselves into having them work. Depending on the curse."

That got another laugh.

"Well – trinkn zoln im piavkes – it's something about letting leeches suck him dry while he's asleep. You have to sound really mysterious and cold without being furious."

"I'm sure he doesn't even know what Yiddish sounds like correctly, so even if your accent were worse than it is – and it's not bad, just obviously not natural – he wouldn't laugh. And I swear that's what it means, so if he tries to look it up it'll come back to the same thing."

"Absolutely not, so long as you'd reject him," Chaya replied matter-of-factly.

"Then you might slug him, though." Chaya herself would be inclined to slugging smug faces if she were inclined to slugging anyone. She wanted to.
